Teresa of CalcuttaReligious, founder of the Missionaries of Charity

Born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu to an Albanian family, she left home at eighteen to join the Sisters of Loreto, taught in Calcutta for nearly twenty years, and then heard what she called a call within a call: to leave the convent and live among the poorest of the poor. The order she founded now works on every continent.

The collect, and a saying

What the Church prays on the feast, and what the saint said.

Collect · 5 September

O God, who called Saint Teresa to respond to the love of your Son thirsting on the Cross with outstanding charity to the poorest of the poor, grant, we beseech you, that by her intercession we may minister to Christ in his suffering brothers and sisters. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
